Both the archive and the meetings will be centered around a circular steel ring designed by NY based architectural collective common room for this occasion. The circular boundary is meant for gathering “around”, rather than gathering “in”, and engages with different ideas of what the “circle” could be. The multiple functions of Casco’s space—whether it be for research, meetings, presentations, construction, or performance—will be fully activated. Projecting as much as reflecting, and collecting new sources and references as much as archiving, will shape events in these two weeks. You are warmly invited to join us in this process. 'Come Alive!' is a series of discursive events organised for Casco’s twentieth anniversary, that looks into the social and artistic initiatives and movements of the recent past and their related historiographical processes, alongside Casco’s own. For the third event, questions and issues that have arisen from the two previous events in this series may reemerge such as the performative use of the archive and institutional responsibility; questions on the authority of historiography and the momentum for historical processes and methods; the frictions and contradictions between individuality, collectivity and social movements; and the position of art, or other cultural practices, and the tension with multiplicities of political action. Participants' biographies Lars Fischer is an architect and founding member of common room. He studied mechanical engineering at Case Western Reserve University and received his Masters in Architecture from the Illinois Institute of Technology. He currently teaches at the New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) and is temporarily based in Rotterdam for the NYIT (Bicycle World) summer curriculum. Josien Pieterse studied Political Science and Gender Studies at the University of Amsterdam. She is currently a coordinator at the Forum for Democratic Development (FDO), chairman of the Association of Dutch Debating centres (VND) and researcher for Aletta, an institute for the history of women. For her research, she conducted an interview project with former female members of the Dutch Communist Party (CPN). Kobe Matthys is a Brussels-based artist with a MA in Fine Arts from the Städelschule für Bildende Künste, Frankfurt. He is conducting a long-term research project on the practices of reapropriation and the public domain. In 1992 he founded Agency, which constitutes an ongoing archive listing quasi-things that witness hesitation. This list of things is derived from juridical processes, lawsuits, cases, controversies, affairs and is presented in various assembles. Oxana Timofeeva is a theoretical researcher at the Jan van Eyck Academy, who received a PhD in Philosophy from the Institute of Philosophy of the Russian Academy of Sciences. She taught Anthropology of Art at the Moscow Institute for Contemporary Art and is co-editor at Chto Delat magazine. Liesbeth Bik and Jos van der Pol work collectively since 1995 as Bik Van der Pol and based in Rotterdam. They explore the potential of art to produce and transmit knowledge, and research methods of how to activate situations as to create a platform for various kinds of communicative activities, often dealing with the negotiation between the past and the present, the public and the private. Matteo Pasquinelli is a writer and researcher currently based in Berlin. He wrote the book ‘Animal Spirits: A Bestiary of the Commons’ (2008) and edited the collections Media Activism (2002) and C’Lick Me: A Netporn Studies Reader (2007). He writes frequently in the intersection of French philosophy, media culture and Italian post-operaismo. His current project is a book about the history of the notion of surplus across biology, psychoanalysis, knowledge economy and the environmental discourse. Anna Colin is a curator at Gasworks, London. She is a critic and contributing editor to the magazines Untitled, London and Art Press, Paris and collaborates frequently with Resonance FM. Her recent curatorial projects include “Disclosure” (Gasworks 2008), Out of the Archives (The Women’s Library London, 2010) and Do You Remember Olive Morris? (with Ana Laura Lopez de la Torre, Gaswork, 2010). |
